SIERRA PHOENIX is a writer, photographer, consultant and facilitator. Her work focuses on the human condition, social and environmental issues, as well as adventure and travel. She has published two books, Lethal Hypocrisy: Self-Sabotaging Real Change, and Mapping to Unlearn: A Memoir of Unlocking Depression. Her writing and photograph have also been published in various print and online magazines, as well as in journals.
Sierra addresses taboo topics directly, believing the whole reality in all of its glamour and ugliness and paradox, needs to be on and at the table, especially where decisions are made and actions taken – from heavily militarized, cloistered government offices, to our daily lives. When asked where she aligns her politics, Sierra’s response is: “I am for sanity and rationality.” When there is a dangerous absence, suppression or oppression of crucial information and discussion, Sierra stands up, steps up and into that space to bring diverse voices and critical thinking. Sierra highlights nuances and complexity, and she challenges the dominant narratives’ assumptions, biases, and therefore decisions and actions. She is often told by people reading her writings or listening to her speak: “I never thought about that.” Their world and thinking is opened up, and that is Sierra’s goal.Earnest, intense, curious and quick to laugh, Sierra Phoenix hopes her work gets people thinking, talking together, and contributes to truly inclusive change.
